Dr Cristina Romao
Visiting Clinician & Mentor
Cristina qualified as a General Dental Practitioner in 1992 from the University of Lisbon, Portugal. Pursuing her interest in dental education Cristina joined the University as a junior lecturer whilst simultaneously starting her own private practice.
Cristina’s growing passion for her clinical work, dental education and research led her to embark on a 3-year full time post graduate program in Clinical Periodontology at the internationally recognized Gothenburg University where she qualified as a Specialist Periodontist in 2002 and completed her Masters degree in 2003 after studying the effects of cigarette smoking on periodontal health in young people.
In 2003 Cristina moved to the UK to continue her clinical and research interests and to join a well-renowned specialist dental center, The Carisbrooke Dental Practice in Leicester.
Cristina’s experience and expertise in the area of Periodontology made her the perfect candidate to hold the position of Honorary Clinical Lecturer in the Department of Periodontology at the Birmingham Dental Hospital during 2004. She was also a regular lecturer at Arminum Research and Dental Education Center, Rimini (Italy). Later on in 2007, she co-developed the postgraduate program “MSc in Clinical Periodontology” with the Institute of Postgraduate Education (UCLan-Preston) and was initially a the Course Tutor, later on became the Course Leader until 2014. She also dedicates her expertise to training/coaching young dentists and dental hygienists, on a one-to-one basis.
Clinically, Cristina’s main interests are the management of periodontal disease cases and re-constructive/cosmetic aspects of periodontal (plastic) surgery, applied to both teeth and implants. She strongly believes in highly tailored “approaches” to periodontal treatment with focus on patient’s individual circumstances and expectations. She also endeavors to give a holistic approach to each case with great emphasis in motivation and behavior changes, in pursuit of better oral and general health.
Cristina is regularly invited to lecture, nationally and internationally.
